After having previously operated through Polydor of India Ltd. (1969 to 1976), Music India Ltd. (1976 to 1994) and PolyGram India Ltd. from late 1994 to November 1999, this is the Indian branch of multinational Universal Music (as a result of PolyGram and Universal Music merger). When the company was still Music India and PolyGram, the latter owns 40 and 51 percent of the shares, respectively. Through Universal Music India, it is a 100 percent subsidiary of a foreign administration. This follows Sony Music and EMI's Virgin label in operation of record labels in India which was 100 percent foreign-owned.
