Parent company of the Chisa (2) record label, founded by Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine in 1964 and named for the Zulu word for "burn". At first self-distributed, distribution deals were eventually made with Vault Record Co., Uni, Motown Record Corporation, Buddah Records & Blue Thumb. A production company, Chisa Productions, helmed by Levine, was responsible for producing most Chisa releases; a publishing arm, Chisa Music, administered songs written by signed artists. The label was closed in 1974 after the sale of Blue Thumb to ABC Records.
