- Originally founded as a television production division of Columbia Pictures. Formed in 1946-47 as Pioneer Telefilms, before being acquired by Columbia a year later and reincorporated as Screen Gems in 1949.
In 1972, Screen Gems was rebranded as Columbia Pictures Television (known today as Sony Pictures Television). The now in-name-only TV label ended up dormant until 1998, 7 years after Sony's acquisition of the Columbia Pictures Group (now the Sony Pictures Movie Group). In 1999, Screen Gems was officially recovered by Sony as a genre-based movie label under the SPMG.
As of 2004, Screen Gems has a set of international divisions abroad: S.G.F. Australia (Pty), Ltd., Screen Gems Japan, LLC. (a direct division of Sony Corporation due to the company's foundation in Japan), Screen Gems Canada, SG Europe, Ltd. and Screen Gems Latin America.
The logo is most notorious for the S symbol rising in red with the synths in the background, known as the S from Hell. The movie version features the blue logo shining in lights and rays, thus spinning around forming the logo, with the Sony byline appearing.
