- A series of ten vinyl LPs featuring the music of Australian composers, artists and orchestras, recorded by the ABC and released by Festival Records in 1972. The initial releases were in elaborate gatefold sleeves, with additional paper pages forming a book. Distinctive black Festival labels were used, showing Australian Festival of Music in large block type.
At least three of the albums were reissued around 1977. The reissues can be identified by catalogue numbers in the company-wide Festival L series (L 27xxx):
Vol 1 - reissue in non-gatefold sleeve on light blue labels. (Abridged version of original Vol 1.)
Vol 5 - reissue in gatefold sleeve with light blue labels.
Vol 7 - reissue with black labels. (not clear from submission if sleeve is gatefold).
Statement from back of sleeve of each volume:
"Australian Festival of Music is a joint project by The Commonwealth Assistance to Australian Composers Fund, The Australasian Performing Right Association Ltd, The Australian Broadcasting Commission and Festival Records. This important issue is a milestone in Australian music. Australian composers, artists, and orchestras are featured. The music was recorded by Australian technicians in ABC studios throughout the nation. The issue will be released and distributed by the Australian company - Festival Records.
No comparable venture has been attempted in Australia before.
This historic first edition will undoubtedly become a collector's piece and will contribute enormously to the promotion and understanding of the astounding growth in recent years of Australian creative music and performance standards."
