Caruso first recording session, that made history, was realised in a hotel room in Milan in 1902. His phonogenic voice made him the first recording star in history, who sold more than a million records with his 1902 recording of 'Vesti le gubba' from Pagliacci by Leoncavallo.
The 10 recordings he made on April 10 of that year are full of miscues and errors of style, but they do show a beautiful lyric tenor that does not have the baritonal richness that characterizes his later work. They were made in one take each which eliminated any chance to fix problems.
This one, "Il Sogno" (from Massenet's opera Manon) was the 4th record, preceeded by Verdi's Celeste Aida and followed by "Una Furtiva Lagrima" from Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'amore"
