A. Hound Dog
B. Don't Be Cruel
"Hound Dog" was originally written for blues singer Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952, which was her only hit record selling over 500,00 copies. Presley's version sold about 10 million copies globally and was his best selling song. The song's opening line "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog", was a euphemism using a "black slang expression referring to a man who sought a woman to take care of him". The song, a Southern blues lament is "the tale of a woman throwing a gigolo out of her house and her life". Quotes from Jerry Leiber.
