- The Department of the Air Force (DAF) consists of the United States Air Force (USAF) and United States Space Force (USSF).
The DAF is one of the three military departments within the United States Department Of Defense. The DAF was formed on September 18, 1947, per the National Security Act of 1947 and it is the military department within which the USAF and the USSF are organized.
The DAF is headed by the Secretary of the Air Force, a civilian, who has the authority to conduct all of its affairs, subject to the authority, direction and control of the Secretary of Defense.
