Volendammer Kermis Hit Festival

- The fair in Volendam is a household word. Not only in Volendam itself, but in the wider area, and sometimes even to the far corners of the Netherlands. People from far and wide visit the 'nicest fair in the Netherlands'. The harbor is full of boats from occasional party-goers and on Saturday evening you will come across Brugstraat, if you pass through it, almost no Volendammer anymore. In addition to the peacefulness and reconciliation that the party exudes, it is also the old traditions that characterize the Volendam festival and that attract many outsiders. One of the most striking traditions is the fairground CD.
It is no longer possible to find out exactly where and when it started, but for years the Volendam fair has been livened up by songs from local artists, the so-called 'fairground hits'. The first name that comes to mind is that of the Dekker Band, which made a smash hit in the early 80s with 'Het Volendammer Lied', an adaptation of the Zeilbergs Volkslied, with the nicer composition 'Lilly van on the b-side. Putte '. This was followed by well-known hits such as "Mooi Volendam" from Canyon, "La Musica" from Fiësta and "Kierewiet from the Central Area" by Moeders Mooist.
These artists always released their songs themselves on a cassette tape or sometimes even on a vinyl single. They were often assisted in this by Jan Cas Sombroek from the record store of the same name, never to be touched by the support of the local talent, who even released a real Jan CAS set several times. The result was that there were often various cassettes or singlets, and later again CDs, on the counter, all from different artists.
The first Fairground CD
In 1997 this changed. The band Feestband Volendam had put a number of fair songs on CD in 1996, and band member Jaap Tol knew from experience that it cost a lot of money. Still, he wanted to make a new record in 1997, and to reduce costs, he contacted other musicians to put multiple songs together on one CD. So a fair CD. At the same time, Wim Westendorp and Cor Veerman (Dekker) were doing exactly the same thing. When they learned about each other's plans, they put their heads together and the Volendammer Kermishit festival, a textual find by Wim Westendorp, was born. Through Cor's contacts, the first edition was released by Red Bullet, the record company of Joost den Draaijer
