Box set includes the Challengers CD album and three specially printed blank CD-Rs, each in its own Digipak. Codes to access a special online download area were provided with the intention that the downloaded material would be burned to the 3 CD-Rs by the customer. Downloaded audio content was made available in both MP3 and FLAC format, video content in QuickTime format, and photographs in JPG format. Disc 4 ("Photos, Videos") contains various photographs from 2007 live performances as well as promotional photographs, tickets, laminates and set lists.
Downloadable content for discs 2, 3, and 4 was made available by Matador Records over the course of several months, beginning prior to Challengers' release date and ending several months afterward. The protracted period of releases and downloads was necessary because, as Matador mentioned in their June 8, 2007 blog entry, "some of these recordings haven't even happened yet."
Tracks from Disc 2 were made available one by one between July 6 and November 21, 2007, except tracks 4 through 6, which were released together. Photos and videos for Disc 4 were released during October and November, 2007. Finally, Disc 3 was made available in its entirety on January 10, 2008.
Near the end of the release and download campaign, the band recorded two Christmas-themed tracks: "Joseph, Who Understood," a new original song; and "Arms Of Mary/Looking At A Baby," a cover medley of Chilliwack and Collectors songs. Matador appended these two tracks to "The Spirit Of Giving" from Challengers and announced the set as a New Pornographers digital Christmas single available on iTunes. The announcement came on November 21, 2007, the same day that Matador had posted "Fugue State," the final intended B-side track for Executive Edition Disc 2. The language accompanying the "Fugue State" download suggested that it was the last track for Disc 2, and that it was safe for Executive Edition customers to burn the tracks to their Disc 2 CD-R and complete it. With the sudden arrival of the Christmas tracks, Matador followed through with their promise that BEGN subscribers would receive every B-side from the Challengers sessions as part of their download package and included the two new tracks in the BEGN download access section. However, in a post on their own message board, the label made it clear that these tracks were not officially part of the Disc 2 lineup and were "delivered to subscribers as an unforeseen bonus" (http://forums.matadorrecords.com/showpost.php?p=62272&postcount=9). For this reason, they are not included in the track list for Disc 2 above.
The Buy Early Get Now pre-order version of the Executive Edition included a copy of the standard Challengers album as Disc 1. The Executive Edition box was also available to purchase outside the BEGN promotion -- these boxes didn't include Challengers itself, though the box left space for the customer to insert another Digipak if he or she chose to purchase the CD album separately.
